No one knows how they do it but I think they are able to reach your subconscious through your eyes. Their eyes are all PUPIL. Insect-like. Obviously more like insects than us. Perhaps they are a future version of insects...? Years to come the insects get so advanced that they actually learn time travel and come back to alter things, or seek their revenge. Who could blame them. I've seen people kill bugs for no reason. Not sport, like hunting, they don't even THINK about it. I used to do it, too. Not anymore. Too much at stake.
They look into your eyes and are able to paralyze you.

Yeah, it sounds crazy, but what if?
To believe in the middle-ground intelligence (between man and God) is to believe that something would have the option to treat us with the same brutality that we treat our own "lesser" earth inhabitants. We have that choice just as anything with more power over us does. Can you imagine being born just to be eaten by an alien?
